Adding Chiropractic to Standard Medical Care Provides Astounding Results- by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
Adding chiropractic care to standard medical care provides SIGNIFICANTLY better results for low back pain than standard medical care alone. This 2013 study from SPINE found that, "“The results of this trial suggest that Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy in conjunction with standard medial care offer a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared to standard care alone, for men and women between the ages of 18-35 with acute low back pain".
The global improvement questionnaires show that the chiropractic patients had greater improvements and only a few reported worsening conditions. However, the standard medical group saw only a few people get better, with most of the patients getting worse. This study clearly shows that patients receiving a combination of medical care and chiropractic care have superior improvements when compared to those only receiving medical care.

Opioid and Benzodiazepine Prescription Rates Are Out of Control- by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
New research shows a stark increase in the prescription rates of benzodiazepine and opioids by primary care physicians. Over 12% of the visits to primary care physicians offices between 2002 and 2009 involved a prescription of one, if not both, of the aforementioned drugs. Researchers evaluated and analyzed over 3 billion primary care physician visits.
This news is especially startling because as Dr. Ming-Chih Kao reports, "[Statistics show] that from 1999 to 2006, there was a 250% increase in fatal overdoses in the US involving opioid medications. More than half of the overdoses involved more than one type of drug — most commonly benzodiazepine."
The interaction between these commonly prescribed drugs are directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of people per year. The researchers concluded that some of the opioid medications are being prescribed at higher rates because physicians have felt the pressure of reduced physical therapy coverages. This is in spite of the fact that ALL evidence based practice guidelines caution against the prescription of opioids and/or narcotics for spine complaints. Additionally, research continues to show that chiropractic care is superior to physical therapy when treating musculoskeletal complaints.
Reaching out, educating, and availing yourself as a conservative treatment option to your local primary care physicians is imperative.

Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy Linked to ADHD Risk in Children
Safety of Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy is Questioned in New Research Study
Last week JAMA Pediatrics published a study which showed an increased prevalence of ADHD in children whose mothers took Tylenol (acetaminophen) during their pregnancy. While causation was not show, correlation was strong.
With over 10% of children (over 6 million) currently diagnosed and being "treated" for ADHD; this research is extremely important.
The study looked at over 64,000 Danish mothers and their children. It was found that mothers who took acetaminophen at any point during the pregnancy had a 28% increased chance of their children having ADHD. If acetaminophen was taken during the second and third trimesters, then the likelihood of ADHD increased by 63%!
Tylenol has long been known to cross the placental barrier between mother and fetus. The implications have been unclear, but exposure to any medication during pregnancy should be carefully considered.
As chiropractors this is EXTREMELY important research. Over 80% of women develop pregnancy-related low back pain during the second and third trimesters of their pregnancy. They may be urged to take an over the counter pain killer (such as Tylenol) as a first line defense by their OB/GYN. It is imperative that we communicate and demonstrate the proven safety and efficacy of chiropractic care for these expecting mothers. Their children may be depending on us.

Why Do Americans Spend So Much on Pharmaceuticals? by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
PBS recently released a fantastic article on why Americans spend so much on pharmaceuticals. We, as a nation, make up over 30% of the worldwide market for drugs. Also, we pay twice as much for the same drugs as many European countries. Their governments regulate the price of the drug in accordance with its therapeutic benefit. In the US, the pharmaceutical companies are essentially able to set their own prices. Additionally, they estimate drug use to RISE as the Affordable Care Act covers the cost of additional prescriptions.
A substantial amount of these drugs are prescribed for pain. We, as a profession, must position and place ourselves as the primary conservative care option for those patients suffering from musculoskeletal complaints. There is no doubt that chiropractic has benefits beyond simply treating "back pain", but we need to start with the primary reasons patients approach our offices.

Back Pain and Narcotics - The Evidence Based Chiropractor
“A recent meta-analysis revealed that narcotics provide little to no benefit in acute back pain, they have no proved efficacy in chronic back pain, and 43% of patients have concurrent substance abuse disorders, with aberrant medication-taking disorders as high as 24% of cases of chronic back pain.” - Martel et al. 2007
So why are so many medications still prescribed for acute back pain? Well, the truth is that primary care physicians have a limited skill set to deal with musculoskeletal complaints. Add to this the constant marketing by pharmaceutical companies and the desire to "help" the patient through the acute pain; and you start to see the formula for ill advised treatment.
Evidence based management guidelines continue to support the use of chiropractic care for these patients. However, the impetus is on us, as chiropractors, to get out and let our local physicians know about the research.
