Landmark Chiropractic Research- The UK BEAM Study- by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
The UK BEAM Study, published in 2004, examined a variety of treatments for back pain in a primary care setting. They looked at active exercise (physical therapy), best care (medication and advice), and spinal manipulation. They results were astounding. In part, they concluded that, "At three and 12 months, participants randomized to the spinal manipulation package reported significant improvements in Roland disability scores and several secondary outcomes- pain, back beliefs, and general physical health.”
This piece of research should be a cornerstone of your interdisciplinary outreach!

Cervical Steroid Injection Helps Only 1/3rd of Patients- by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
A recent study presented at the International Spine Invention Society Annual Meeting showed that only 1/3rd of patients who received cervical steroid injections actually benefitted from the procedure. Specifically, they looked at patients suffering from cervical disc herniations. The patients had previous MRI confirmed nerve root compromise.
They found that 1 month after a transforaminal injection, only 35.4% reported a reduction in their radicular pain. Last year, researchers found that every steroid injection in the lumbar spine increased the risk of fracture by 21.%. Although we don't yet know the risk of fracture in the cervical spine, it appears to be quite a chance to take if the treatment (the injections) are useless in two-thirds of patients.
Chiropractic care has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment option for patients with cervical radiculopathy. As a matter of fact, a recent study showed direct reduction in nerve root pressure when a flexion/distraction type chiropractic technique was used in the cervical spine.

Low Back Pain: Tylenol is No Better Than Placebo - by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
A new research study from the Lancet has shown Tylenol, or more specifically the active ingredient paracetamol, to provide no added relief when compared to placebo for acute low back pain. The study is a double-blinded, randomized-controlled trial, which is one of the highest classes of research.
For many people with acute low back pain; Tylenol is one of the first recommendations from their Primary Care Physician. This study finds that we should question the universal endorsement of paracetamol. Did you know that previous research studies have found chiropractic care to be one of the most safe and effective treatment options available for acute low back pain? Often, primary care providers unfortunately rely on the status quo, which is this case would be the prescription or recommendation of paracetamol for acute low back pain. However, evidence based guidelines indicate that chiropractic care may be a superior option.

Referral Patterns of Primary Care Physicians and Chiropractors- by The Evidence Based Chiropractor
Our July 2014 MD Research Brief is set to look at a piece of research from BioMed Central titled, "Referral Patterns and Attitudes of Primary Care Physicians towards Chiropractors". This should be considered essential reading for any chiropractor looking to establish interdisciplinary referral relationships.
In short, they found that "87% of MD's reported that their patients had asked them for information about chiropractic, and clause to 75% of PCP's have patients who have requested a referral to a chiropractor". This is great information. We can concluded that nearly every (over three-quarters) of PCP's have patients interested in chiropractic care. However, they also found that "only 24% of DO's and 29% of MD's had themselves formally referral a patient to a chiropractor". This is a huge opportunity. Patients are asking about chiropractic care and their PCP's are making scant referrals. By building the relationships with these physicians and showcasing the efficacy, safety, and satisfaction associated with chiropractic care, you can position yourself as their first referral choice. Our friends and neighbors are counting on us. We provide one of the best conservative care options in the history of healthcare!
